If you've heard the name "Ampersand" floating around and gone looking for what it actually is, you're probably not finding much — it's brand new to the South African market, and we're one of the first clubs here to get our hands on it. We've been sampling it ourselves before bringing it in properly, so here's the honest rundown of what it is and how it's different from a normal edible.
So what is it, exactly?
Ampersand isn't a gummy or a chocolate bar. It's described by its makers as a plant-based "oral concentrate" — a small dissolve-in-the-mouth product made from live rosin rather than a standard cannabis-infused oil. The instruction that comes with it is specific: let it dissolve, don't swallow it like a normal edible. That one detail is the whole point of the product.
Why does that matter for how fast it works?
We covered this in our Edibles 101 post: a normal edible is slow because THC is fat-soluble, so it has to travel through your gut and liver before it reaches your bloodstream — which is why cookies and gummies typically take 30 to 60 minutes to kick in. Ampersand is built differently. It's formulated to be water-soluble rather than fat-based, which lets it absorb through the tissue in your mouth and bloodstream far more directly, skipping most of that digestive detour. According to the brand's own stated figures, that's good for an onset of roughly 2 to 5 minutes, with effects running up to 8 hours. We'd flag those as the manufacturer's claims rather than something we've independently measured, but the underlying mechanism — water-soluble delivery bypassing slow digestion — is a real, documented approach used across the fast-acting edibles category, not just marketing language.
What makes it a live rosin product specifically?
The concentrate base is made the solventless way — the same ice-water-hash-and-pressure process we walked through in our Live Resin vs. Live Rosin vs. Distillate post — rather than a basic cannabis oil. That's a deliberate choice: it keeps more of the original plant's flavour and terpene character in a product that would otherwise taste like nothing but sweetener.
