If you've browsed our Nectar Collectors section and wondered what you're actually looking at, here's the short version: a nectar collector (sometimes called a dab straw) is a tube-shaped tool with a heated tip at one end and a mouthpiece at the other. Instead of lighting anything, you bring the tip to temperature, touch it lightly to your concentrate, and draw through the straw. No flame goes anywhere near what you're inhaling.
Manual vs electronic — what's the real difference?
Manual nectar collectors use a handheld butane torch to heat the tip — usually titanium, quartz, or ceramic — until it's hot enough to vaporise concentrate on contact. They're simple, don't need charging, and tend to be the more affordable route in.
Electronic versions swap the torch for a battery-powered heating element with its own on/off control, so there's no open flame involved at all. They're the more convenient, beginner-friendly option — you're not managing a torch alongside everything else — though obviously the battery needs to stay charged.
The basic idea, step by step
- Concentrate goes in a small heat-safe dish — quartz or silicone both work.
- Heat the tip (torch for manual, the unit's own control for electronic), then give it a few seconds to settle rather than using it straight off peak heat.
- Touch the tip lightly to the concentrate while drawing through the mouthpiece — a light graze rather than pressing in.
- Let the tip cool fully before you put it away or clean it.
Looking after it
A quick wipe of the tip after each use keeps residue from building up and affecting flavour down the line. For a proper clean, the removable parts — especially the tip — can be soaked in isopropyl alcohol, then rinsed and left to dry fully before the next use. Store it standing upright so nothing sticky pools where it shouldn't, and handle quartz and ceramic tips gently — both can crack if they go from very hot to very cold too quickly.
Which one of ours fits you?
We stock a small, deliberately simple range — enough to cover the two real use-cases without overwhelming you with options:
If you'd rather not think about pairing a tool with concentrate separately, our Combo Special bundles a nectar collector with 1g of Budder, Crumble, or Honeycomb for R550 — everything you need in one go.
